Jack Absolute Flies Again

Jack Absolute Flies Again

Jack Absolute Flies Again by Richard Bean and Oliver Chris, based on Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals is our spring show and runs from Thu 5th — Sat 7th March.

Auditions

Auditions for our March 2026 production, Jack Absolute Flies Again will take place on 26th & 27th November 2025 at The Mill Arts Centre, from 7.30pm.

Show week is 1-7th March 2026, which includes get in, tech and dress rehearsals, and the show dates of 5-7 March 2026. You must be available on these dates if you wish to audition.

You do not have to be a BCP member to audition, but you will be required to join if cast. See our ‘Get Involved’ page for more details on membership.

Audition Format

As most of the play is done as an ensemble, auditions will involve reading scenes with other auditionees. You DO NOT need to learn the auditions pieces off by heart, but you can do so if you wish.

Rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and every other Sunday.

Please note that we anticipate a large number of auditionees for this production: as such, you may not be able to read for every character you wish to audition for if there are multiple. Equally, if you are open to being cast in a role you may not have explicitly auditioned for, please state this on your audition form which you will be given upon arrival.

If auditioning for the roles of Jack, Faulkland, Scunthorpe, Acres, Sir Anthony, and Khattri, pages 31-43 of the script will be used in the audition to cover as many roles as possible. If auditioning for Lucy, Mrs Malaprop, Coventry, Lydia or Julia, these have their own script sections, all of which are linked below.

Characters & Audition Pieces

Please note the ages given are just a guide; most roles are fairly equal as the play acts largely as an ensemble piece.

  • Jack Absolute (RAF Pilot Officer) – early 20s- late 40s – Male
Jack is a scheming but loveable man, oozes confidence and slightly cocky; smitten for Lydia. Audition Piece: P31-43
  • Roy Faulkland (RAF Pilot Officer – fiancée to Julia) – early 20s- late 40s – Male
Roy could be played quite posh but this is open, a little slower than other pilots, loves Julia (his cousin), whom he is obsessive about. Audition Pieces: P31-43 and Coventry/Acres/Faulk Section
  • Bob Acres (Australian Pilot Officer) – early 20s- late 40s – Male
Crass yet endearing, fake confidence (that is tested), Australian accent. Chasing after Lydia. Audition Pieces: P31-43 and Coventry/Acres/Faulk Section
  • Bikram Khattri (Sikh – listed as from Punjab, but could change, Pilot Officer – early 20s- late 40s – Male
A poet and one who is lofty and dreamy with his words (quite a bad poet). The play references Khattri’s Oxford education so accent can be played with. Chasing after Lydia. Audition Piece: P31-43
  • Lydia Languish (RAF First Officer and heiress) – early 20s- late 40s – Female
Fairly feisty, radical feminist, but as posh as they come and unaware of this when speaking to her maid. Chasing after Dudley Scunthorpe but actually loves Jack. Audition Piece: Lydia & Julia Section
  • Julia Melville (Volunteer Auxiliary) – early 20s- late 40s – Female
Lydia’s best friend and chief confidant to gossip with; more traditional in her views of gender. A little silly at points – engaged to her cousin, Roy, whom she adores. Audition Piece: Lydia & Julia Section
  • Lucy (maid to Mrs Malaprop, Cockney accent) – any age (but matching Dudley)
Rough and ready, and cheeky, but smarter than the rest of the house. She acts as the audience’s narrator at points (and breaker of the fourth wall). Loves Dudley Scunthorpe. Likes to meddle with others’ plans for fun. Audition Pieces: P31-43 & Lucy Section
  • Mrs Malaprop (Lady of Fontwell Manor) – 50s to 80s – Female
Thinks she is more sophisticated than she is, tries to be dignified but accidently spouts malaprops very often. Audition Piece: Mrs Malaprop Section
  • Major General Sir Anthony Absolute (Lord of Devon, retired Army veteran), late 50s – 80s – Male
Slightly manic and terrifying, takes no nonsense from his son; is also scheming like Jack. Audition Piece: P31-43
  • Brian Coventry (RAF, Intelligence Officer) – 30s-60s – Male
Almost like a father figure to the pilots (or big brother) he looks after his men, but is often exasperated by them. Audition Pieces: Coventry/Acres/Faulk Section
  • Dudley Scunthorpe (Warrant Officer, Mechanic, RAF, Yorkshireman) – any age (but matching Lucy) – Male
A Yorkshireman who is a little confused by the fuss around him. He likes Lucy and fixing planes but is dragged into the mess of others. Audition Piece: P31-43
  • Peter Kingsmith and Stuart Sampson (minor speaking roles but will be on stage in unspeaking roles too) – Male
Ideally same age as other pilots but this is open. Accents open to interpretation – possibly some other Commonwealth nations represented – e.g. Canadian. Audition Piece: If auditioning for either of these roles, you’ll be asked to read for one of the other characters.
